The Cause

Washington, D.C. has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the country.

That's where Washington Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center comes in. Distinguished for providing the capital region’s best cancer care, the Cancer Institute provides the most comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment options available.

A state-of-the-art facility, featuring some of the most sophisticated diagnostic and therapy technologies in the country, the Cancer Institute has earned the Top Cancer Center recognition from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the Advisory Board’s Oncology Roundtable.

Because of its size, superior staff and excellent facilities, the Cancer Institute utilizes a unique approach for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer - providing comprehensive, interdisciplinary care and ensuring that our “patient first” philosophy sets us apart. The combined experience and education of our medical staff, our team approach, our patient coordinators and access to other forms of care set us apart as the region’s leader in cancer care.

The medical director of Washington Cancer Institute is Sandra M. Swain, MD. In 2013, Dr. Swain served as president of the American Cancer Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the world’s leading professional organization for cancer physicians, with more than 30,000 members.
